The courses are all riddled with hazard, whether it’s tricky corners, maddening (but doable) jumps or moving parts that fit in with the course theme. The core gameplay is what you what expect: set the direction and power of your shot, hit it, and hope. Golf With Your Friends is a crazy golf/mini golf game (depending on your region) that emphasises the crazy aspects. You can find out more about Mini Motorways here. Mini Motorways is currently exclusive to Apple Arcade, but is due to arrive on Steam this summer.

There are a number of maps to try, each with their own challenges, all offering a minimalist verion of real-world city layouts, such as Los Angeles, Berlin and Tokyo. The objective is to build out your city as far as you can, but if enough cars fail to reach their destination, the game is over. Every time you complete an in-game week, you’ll be given a bonus that might help alleviate the gridlock that will inevitably form, whehter that’s extra road tiles, bridges, motorways or traffic lights to help manage the flow of cars. As time passes, more buildings appear that need to be connecteed to your road network, but with them comes more traffic. The map starts simple, with a few houses and one workplace, and you simply build a road between the two. Like its forebear, the game is centred on managing traffic, except unlike the linear journeys of underground trains, you now have to deal with a network of roads and motorways that take travellers to a wider range of destinations. Mini Motorways is the sequel to Mini Metro, which we’ve covered previously. You can find out more about Nerts! Online here. In addition to the Nerts concept, Zachtronics have added their own house rules, tweaked to allowed for longer tournaments and even composed their own theme tune.

This has now been polished up and made available for free via Steam. When they switched to remote working, they programmed an online version that would allow them to keep playing. It’s a game the Zachtronics team say they regularly played in the office prior to lockdown measures necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The suit piles are in a communal area, which means any of the six players can add to them, potentially blocking someone from clearing their next card. Nerts’ key difference is it’s a faster-paced competitive version. The objective is much the same as Solitaire: work your way through a deck of cards to find and separate the four suits, piling them up in number order and then (once the aces have beend found) completing each set. Nerts! Online is not actually a Zachtronics invention it’s an adaptation of a Solitaire variant that’s been around since at last the 1940s (and according to some reports as early as 1890). Ostriv is currently in Early Access and you can find out more here. The campaign mode also expands to the point where your decisions affect the future of the whole country. Ostriv also sets different challenges for players that take into account things like weather - an example being to build enough homes for your villagers before winter sets in. The hope is this enables you to create a more organic-looking town, rather than one that looks artificial and cobbled together from preset pieces. But Ostriv’s developers are also trying to raise the bar for city builders, doing away with grid-based systems and allowing players to lay out their city in a 3D landscape however they want. The basic mechanics will likely seem familiar to fans of the genre: place buildings that handle certain tasks, gather resources to afford said buildings, and generally try to manage your town as efficiently as possible to ensure its inhabitants are well fed and cared for. You play the governor of a newly formed town and are tasked with guiding this community’s growth into a fully-fledged city. Ostriv is an indie city building and management game set in 18th Century Ukraine.
